Creativity + Community: Celebrating AAW Artists in Tucson

Hard Times. Make Art! – The Community Gathers to Create New Things & Celebrate Local Artists

Artists At Work (AAW) and Southwest Folklife Alliance invite you to join us in an intergenerational afternoon of art-making, problem-solving, and good times. Artists, art-lovers, families, kids, teens, seniors, and “ordinary folks” welcome. Gather to make meaning, joy, and good stuff.

Here’s what the day will look like:

1:00 – 2:30 PM | Art-Making
Begin the afternoon with hands-on, communal art-making sessions led by:

• Mario Valencia – Printmaking
• Adriana Felix – Tiny clay doll crafting
• Annetta Koruh – Hopi weaving with natural materials
• AAW Tucson Artists (below)

Make art from recycled or natural materials, share your work with others, and experience art-making as a shared, reflective activity. While we work, we will ask ourselves: What do we do to keep ourselves going? What is the point of caring for neighbors? Can gathering in itself be part of the power we need?

2:30 – 4:00 PM | Conversation with featured guest Holly Doll & AAW Artists
We will hear from Holly Doll from Rural Ignite with the Department of Public Transformation, an “at-home” artist residency focused on uplifting and supporting rural artists who engage in social/civic work and are in the early stages of their artistic practice.She will share a bit about the Ignite Rural program and help frame our conversation with the AAW Artists. Local AAW Artists will share their experiences making social impact (good stuff) with a local community organization:

• Katrina Kerstetter & Iskashitaa Refugee Garden Art Program
• Pilo Mora with Regeneración
• Shane Beeshlagaii & Mission Garden
