Tanya began her journey in Bulgarian folk dance at the age of six in her village of Peturch, Bulgaria. Under the guidance of her father, Dimitar Naydenov, an accomplished dancer and keeper of the village’s dance heritage, Tanya learned not only the movements but also the stories and cultural meanings embedded in each dance.

Her passion for folk dance grew as she trained formally at the local cultural center, deepening her appreciation for the dances’ cultural contexts and solidifying her commitment to preserving and sharing this tradition. Tanya pursued further education at the National School of Dance Art in Sofia, where she honed her skills in practical techniques, music, and the historical significance of Bulgarian folk dance. She continued her studies at the Academy of Music, Dance, and Art in Plovdiv, specializing in choreography, performance, and teaching methods.

Bulgarian folk dance, with its intricate footwork, rhythmic patterns, and vibrant music, reflects the nation’s cultural diversity and heritage. Passed down through generations, these dances preserve the stories and traditions of the Bulgarian people, serving as a living archive of their communal spirit and national pride. For Tanya, this art form is a vital connection to history and identity, uniting people across regions and generations.

Committed to its preservation, Tanya engages her community through workshops, performances, and cultural events. She emphasizes education and outreach to ensure younger generations understand and carry forward these traditions.

Seeking to expand her impact, Tanya earned a second master’s degree at Arizona State University, where she introduced diverse students to Bulgarian dance, emphasizing its cultural significance. Her work on world dance traditions highlighted the universal importance of preserving heritage and using dance to express identity.

Tanya’s lifelong dedication ensures Bulgarian folk dance continues to thrive as a vibrant expression of cultural heritage, connecting past and present while securing its legacy for the future.
