Shifting entrenched narratives about the US-Mexico border might be a Herculean task … but listening to and supporting the many, diverse stories within and across the region is one way to begin. We worked with the Ford Foundation to document its philanthropic initiative supporting the gathering and sharing of such stories.
Over three years, the foundation supported three organizations–National Association for Latino Arts and Culture, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the Borealis Foundation–in funding artists, journalists, and movement workerss in immigration rights to gather and share the nuanced stories of lives, activities, joys, and challenges both within and traversing the US-Mexico border. Collectively, the grantees’ work is testament to the kind of courage and stamina necessary for creating equity and well-being withing community and between nation-states. We hope it will resonate far and wide.
We were honored to serve as ethnographers of this complex and forward-thinking work, and even more thrilled to be able to present our finding in a non-traditional, more creative format.
